Human Trafficking

Course Description:

In this course we will explore the slavery problem in Ohio, the United States, and the world with emphasis on women and children. We will examine actual human trafficking cases in Ohio and the new Columbus legislation trying to help relieve this problem. It is critical to understand what is taking place so we can protect our children and educate them on how to become less vulnerable. This course is critical for middle and high school teachers.
There are over 27 million slaves in the world today. Currently, throughout the world, there are 100 million females who cannot be located. That is 3% of the world’s female population!  Every day in the United States 2,300 people become missing! Second only weapon sales and having surpassed drug sales, human trafficking is the largest and fastest growing organized crime activity in the world resulting in a multi-billion dollar industry. Forced factory and agricultural labor, the sex trade, debt bondage, domestic help, and children soldiers comprise the many facets of this contemptible enterprise.

Target Standards: When the student completes this course he/she will be able to:
     1.  Explain the types of slavery employed today and the differences between turn-of-the-century slaves and
          today’s trafficked victims
     2.  Recognize the many indicators of a trafficked victim, sex trade, labor, domestic servant, debit bondage
     3.  Identify the signs of vulnerability traffickers look for and teach these dangers to students
     4.  Detect today’s services and products linked to slave production and the many corporations involved.
     5.  Develop programs for reducing human trafficking and promoting advocacy against this crime

Evaluation Strategies:
     1. Each participant will develop a two-hour lesson plan for a middle school or high school class using pertinent information from this course. The dangers of human trafficking, signs to look for indicating a slave or trafficker, and ways of preventing personal vulnerability need to be covered in the lesson plan.
     2. Each participant...
